Newborn Sessions
Newborn sessions are designed to capture the sleepy, small form of your baby. From simple color coordinated wraps to fun sets, it is an artistic way to immortalize the short newborn phase! This is designed mostly for newborns under six weeks (though preferably about 7-21 days old - the older they are the less sleepy they are, so you will likely have more awake photos). Sessions always include immediate-family photos and the delivery of a full digital gallery within two-three weeks of the session. You have the option to be at the studio (near Ames Lake) or in your own home. Pick the session that best fits your needs!
Baby is boss! It is expected that you will likely have to reschedule your newborn appointment to compensate for baby’s actual delivery date. So pick a date that makes sense with the expected delivery date and we will reschedule accordingly, if needed, when baby makes an appearance to still fit in that newborn window!
Newborn Posing
-
Beanbag Posing
Beanbag poses focus entirely on the baby, using a soft, supportive beanbag and a simple fabric backdrop and posed in a variety of curled, natural-looking positions - without the distractions of props or scenery. The baby can either be naked, wrapped, semi-wrapped, or clothed (depending on the pose) and the only other optional accessory is either a headband or hat/bonnet.

Flokati
Flokati is a thick, soft, shaggy wool rug. It adds soft texture and depth to the photos, keeping the background a timeless, organic look. It typically is used more for swaddled, semi-swaddled, or clothed poses and is definitely a favored top-down sibling or parent shot.

Props
Props are used in newborn photography to create a styled, story-driven image. The baby is carefully placed on or in the desired prop and surrounded by coordinating colors, textures, or themed accessories to elevate the story telling of the image. Depending on the pose, the baby can either be naked, clothed, semi-wrapped, or wrapped in the prop.

Newborn Safety
At Practical Elegance Studio your baby’s safety during the session is the highest priority. Newborns are delicate, and every pose, wrap, and prop is chosen and adjusted with care to ensure they are always comfortable, secure, and supported. I am certified in newborn safety through the Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International (APNPI). I have also personally navigated the newborn phase (twice!) and so know firsthand how intense those first few weeks can be - sleepless nights, endless feedings, spit-ups, and blowouts included. That lived experience helps me approach each session with empathy, patience, and care to meet your baby where they are and work with them to capture memories that last a lifetime.
My posing style is gentle, natural, and baby-led, inspired by the way your little one would instinctively rest on your chest, in your arms, or in the womb. I never force babies into uncomfortable positions - instead, I focus on poses that honor how they naturally curl, stretch, and settle when they feel secure. This approach not only keeps your baby safe, but it also creates images that feel genuine and timeless.
With a calm attitude, careful handling, and constant attention to your baby’s cues, you can feel confident that your newborn is in expert hands - and that their first portraits will reflect the beauty of who they truly are.
Because the newborn photography industry currently has no formal safety regulations, not every photographer is trained in safe handling techniques. Choosing a photographer with specific safety training can give you peace of mind. I encourage families to learn more about what safe newborn photography should look like by visiting the Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International (APNPI) website.

What to Expect
Step 1
Decide if I am the right photographer for you. Do my images and concepts speak to you? Is this how you want your memories captured?
If so, pick desired session and schedule accordingly.
Step 2
Decide on where you would like the session to be held, at home or in the studio. Then decide the theme or sets that you are interested in and we will discuss in detail how to make your vision come to life!
For Newborns there is a selection of colors and sets to choose from. Think about what is important to you and pick things that encapsulate your vision. I am happy to walk you through the process and help make your vision come to life!
Step 3
Prepare for your session.
Are you bringing your own wardrobe? If so, pick out your desired outfits.
If you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, make sure to bring everything you or the baby would need to make it through the session. Don’t worry about timing, we will go at the baby’s pace. So there will be breaks to feed them.
Step 4
Enjoy your session!
Come ready to relax! Let’s capture some memories!
Planning Your Session
-
When scheduling a newborn session it is best to have the session in the first six weeks (ideally 7-21 days old). But the baby is boss and will come when they come. So for getting on the calendar, pick a date around your due date, from there we will be in touch, and reschedule accordingly after your baby is born!
Exceptions to this age rule for newborn sessions are premature babies (born before 37 weeks). If you have a baby that is older than six weeks and still want photos, don’t worry! You can still have an infant session with newborn-like photos!
-
You will receive your online gallery of images within three weeks of your session. Since all packages include the full gallery, you will be able to download all photos directly from the gallery.
There are options to buy prints of any photos if you do desire and have them shipped to your house.
-
Payment is done through an online portal with a credit card. A 25% retainer (of the original session fee) is paid upfront, the rest of the payment is due the day of the session and the card on file will be charged.
All pricing is transparent, and listed on the website. Sessions list the deliverables and the cost. Sales tax will be applied.
-
Being at home for your session should be as stress free as possible! Do not worry about having the house in tiptop shape! For newborn photos with props I will need some space to set up my lighting and the props. Ideally this would be about an 8×8ft area, typically the living room or dinning room has the space for it. For family photos we will spend most of the time next to a window with good lighting, the nursery (if set up), and/or your bedroom.
-
As photography is not something that most families do frequently, it is understandable that you are nervous! There is no need for concern. I will guide, prompt, and direct you and your family. I strive for session that authentically captures your family as best as possible, so there is no need be anything other than yourselves! I will prompt for natural-looking poses and capture candids throughout the session.
-
I have an extensive selection of newborn and infant props, from buckets, baskets, bathtubs, bowls, chairs, etc with lots of different backdrops. I have hundreds of headbands and hats for newborns. As well as, a large selection of outfits for newborns and infants up to a year. I am happy to work with any theme or color palette that you desire! I will reach out to you after you book your session to go over your vision and the details of your session to determine the props that I will be using. If you have any specific questions on props or themes, please feel free to reach out to me!
-
Please discuss with me if you have anything you want incorporated! I would suggest only bringing things of sentimental value. I would not recommend buying and bringing your own props as they may not have been designed or tested for safety for newborn photography. If there is anything that you are hoping for that you are unsure if I have, please do let me know! I have quite the extensive collection and would be happy to discuss your vision to see if I already have something or am willing to add to my collection!
